If you're are running lots of programs simultaneously on your computer you'll surely appreciate those free utilities.
They free up memory by forcing Windows system to flush down its memory cache. The memory cache consists of programs, DLLs and system input/output buffers that are already opened but aren't used. So you must have a way to control the RAM you use, instead of it being automatically taken by the system startup and running programs.
An useful feature of such programs is the integrated monitoring of RAM(random access memory). In some programs you'll see an icon residing on your taskbar having a green, yellow and red indicator or a memory performance bar. It shows your current memory condition as well as your available memory.

You can customize the critical amount of memory reached. In such situation an emergency free up takes place.
Also, you can boot applications, thus freeing up more RAM and run effectively memory hog programs like: graphic applications, word processing, streaming audio players, antivirus programs etc.

On Rambooster goto Edit->Options and check Set Auto Optimization ON as well as launch automatically at startup.
You can always do manual optimization and thus free some memory by pressing button Optimize.
